Privacy Policy

Plain language, no surprises. This explains what OzReel collects, why, and the control you have over it. The short version: your catches are yours.

LAST UPDATED · 3 JUNE 2026  ·  EFFECTIVE · 3 JUNE 2026
The short version. You can use OzReel as a guest with no account. Photos and location stay on your device unless you save a catch or create an account. We never sell your data, and you can delete everything at any time.

01 Summary

OzReel helps you identify a fish, measure it, and check whether it's legal to keep. To do that well, the app sometimes needs your camera, your approximate location, and — if you choose to keep records — a place to store your catches. This policy describes exactly what that involves.

This policy applies to the OzReel mobile app and this website. It is written to align with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

02 What we collect

We collect the minimum needed to make the app work, and we tell you why for each item.

DataWhyWhen
Catch photosTo identify the species and measure lengthOnly when you take or upload a photo
Approximate locationTo apply the correct state or territory rulesWhile you're checking a catch
Catch recordsSpecies, length, status, date and place for your logbookOnly when you tap “Save to logbook”
Account detailsEmail to sync your logbook across devicesOnly if you create an account
DiagnosticsAnonymous crash and performance data to fix bugsAggregated, never tied to you

We do not collect your contacts, your browsing history, or advertising identifiers.

03 How we use it

Your data is used to provide the service you asked for — nothing more:

  • Identify species and estimate length from your photos.
  • Match your catch against the right jurisdiction's size, bag and seasonal rules.
  • Keep your logbook in sync if you've signed in.
  • Improve identification accuracy using anonymised, aggregated data.

We never use your catches or locations to build an advertising profile, and we never sell them.

04 Location & photos

Location

OzReel uses your approximate location to decide which state or territory rules to apply. You can decline location access and pick a region manually — the app still works. Location is used at the moment of a check and is only stored if it's attached to a catch you choose to save.

Photos

Photos are processed to identify and measure your catch. If you use the app as a guest, photos stay on your device. They are only uploaded to our servers if you save a catch to a synced account, and even then they're stored privately to your logbook.

Camera and location permissions are requested only when a feature needs them, and you can change your mind anytime in your device settings.

05 Sharing

We share data only with service providers who help us run OzReel — for example, cloud hosting and crash reporting — under contracts that limit them to our instructions. We may disclose information if required by law. We do not sell personal information, and we don't share your catches with other anglers unless you explicitly choose to.

06 Storage & security

Synced data is stored on servers protected by encryption in transit and at rest. We keep your logbook for as long as your account is active. If you delete a catch it's removed from your logbook; if you delete your account, your personal data is erased within 30 days, except where we're required to retain limited records by law.

07 Your rights

Under the Australian Privacy Principles you can:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct anything that's inaccurate.
  • Delete your account and associated data.
  • Withdraw camera or location permissions at any time.

To exercise any of these, see how to delete your account or email us at support@ozreel.com.

08 Children

OzReel isn't directed at children under 15. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll remove it.

09 Changes

If we update this policy we'll change the “last updated” date above and, for material changes, notify you in the app. Continuing to use OzReel after an update means you accept the revised policy.

10 Contact

Questions about privacy or a request about your data? Email support@ozreel.com and we'll respond within a reasonable time. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
